A twist on the traditional hamantaschen cookies, these savory mini pizza hamantaschen are the perfect dinner option for a Purim celebration!

Baked hamantaschen pizzas on parchment paper topped with basil.

The most frequent way to celebrate Purim is to eat sweet Hamantaschen cookies. However, there aren’t specific foods commonly served for meals for this holiday. These pizza hamantaschen are a triangle shape like the cookies, but filled with savory pizza toppings making them perfect for a Purim party appetizer, snack, lunch, or dinner.

For the other 364 days of the year, you can still make these cute pizzas. Just leave the dough circles flat instead of folding them into a triangle. Or try my popular Lavash Flatbread Pizza recipe which uses Middle Eastern lavash bread as a crispy and tasty shortcut for the pizza crust.

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

    • Easy recipe that comes together quickly with a pre-made dough and only a few ingredients.
    • Fun to make with the kids.
    • Makes the perfect snack, appetizer, or dinner for Purim.
    • Can make them earlier in the day to save time.

Dana’s note: These are a fun way to take a traditional shape and to create something savory and delicious to eat on Purim. They’re perfect to make with kids. Having the guests help make the pizzas can be a fun party activity.

The pre-shaped Mazor's mini dough circles are a great time-saving shortcut, but I have made these with other pizza doughs, and they all come out well, like a dough ball that needs to be rolled out and cut into circles or a refrigerator dough that needs to be unfurled and then cut.

    Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

See the recipe card below for a complete ingredient list and measurements.

Ingredients needed to make hamantaschen pizza.
    Mazor's mini pizza dough.
    • Pre-made pizza dough - I like Mazor’s frozen mini pizza dough rounds (they’re kosher).  They come in a package of 24 three inch round pizza doughs. They are perfect for making these mini pizza hamantaschen. You can also use any store bought pizza dough. Roll out to ⅛ - ¼ inch thick, then use a 3 inch round cookie cutter or glass jar to make dough circles.
    • Pizza sauce - Use your favorite store-bought pizza or marinara sauce to save time. You can also substitute with pesto sauce.
    • Shredded mozzarella - Use alone or a combination of mozzarella, provolone, and parmesan cheeses.
    • Your favorite pizza toppings - Use whatever toppings your family likes, like olives, red onions, mushrooms, or peppers.

Cover a baking sheet with parchment paper. If needed, roll out the pizza dough with a rolling pin, and cut into rounds.

Place dough rounds on the sheet pans. Form the pizza right on the baking sheets.

Spread about 1 teaspoon of tomato sauce in the center of each dough circle, leaving a small empty border around the outer edge.

Hamantaschen pizzas folded on parchment paper.
Form the pizza right on the baking sheet.
Folded hamantaschen pizzas on parchment paper.
Form into triangles, pinching or folding the corners closed.

Add a pinch of oregano and about 1 ½ teaspoons of mozzarella cheese, followed by any pizza toppings if using. Top it off with a small pinch of fresh chopped basil on each.

Form each circle into a triangular hamantaschen shape by pinching the top edge of the circle to form the first point, followed by pinching on the left and right sides on the bottom to complete the triangle with 2 more points.

Bake in a 450ºF oven for 8-10 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted. Serve warm.

*Note that my Mazor pizza dough circles in the photos were not exactly circular in shape. This particular batch was the last package left in the freezer section at the kosher market just before Passover, so they had gotten misshapen along the way, but I was still able to form them in the hamantaschen shape, so it worked out just fine.

    Top Tips

    • Use premade pizza dough and store-bought tomato sauce to save time.
    • The herbs kick up the flavor for these mini pizzataschen. Try dried Italian oregano, fresh basil, or both.
    • Re-pinch any points of the triangular dough that don’t stay closed just before it goes into the oven. Pinch hard to make them stay while cooking.
    • Top and form the pizza-taschens right on the baking sheet. It’s much easier than trying to transfer formed pizzas.
    • No need to put olive oil or egg wash on exposed dough.
    • You don’t have to defrost the premade pizza dough circles (Mazor’s) beforehand, because by the time you fill and shape each one, the dough will be defrosted enough to bake.

    Make Ahead

Prep the pizza early in the day and leave them in the refrigerator unbaked until about 30 minutes before serving. Leave out on the counter for about 15 minutes and then bake.

    Storage and Reheating

How to store: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.

How to reheat: Reheat leftovers in the oven at 350°F until warmed throughout and crisp on the edges.

What to Serve with Mini Pizza Hamantaschen

    • Classic Hamantaschen with Butter
    • Shaved Brussel Sprouts Salad
    • Butternut Squash and Arugula Salad
    • Cauliflower Soup
